The enchanting town of Seward, Alaska sits on the Kenai Peninsula on the Resurrection Bay. It’s where the mountains meet the sea and no matter what way you look there is a stunning view. We visited Alaska for my husband’s birthday and this kozy little town was our favorite stop on our trip. I loved watching the sea otter’s play in the morning while sipping my coffee and hiking glaciers in the afternoon, but what was so unexpected was the amazing food and drink! There is a focus on fresh and local that gives an upscale vibe in a comfortable atmosphere. Some of the favorite places we visited were Resurrect Art Coffee House & Gallery, Sea Bean Cafe,The Cookery & Zudy’s Cafe.
Resurecct Art Coffee House & Gallery
This quaint little coffee house is located in an old church and is the perfect location to start your day in Seward. You can sip one of their amazing coffee creations and enjoy a tasty scone while shopping for local art. The historic and eclectic atmosphere gives you a true feel for all the the town of Seward has to offer.
Sea Bean Cafe
We stopped at the Sea Bean for a late breakfast and felt comfortable and welcome the second we stepped through the door. Even though they only serve breakfast and lunch don’t let it fool you. The food is fresh and made from scratch with only the best local ingredients. I had the the Lox Plate with fresh Alaskan salmon on a deliciously warm bagel. If we had one more day in Seward, I would have ordered paninis from Sea Bean, with locally-made focaccia, and packed them for a picnic lunch on a hike.
The Cookery & Oyster Bar
No trip to Seward is complete unless you eat at The Cookery & Oyster Bar. The ever changing menu at the Cookery consists of only fresh and local ingredients, which means the fish you are eating was probably caught that morning right off the coast of the Kenai Peninsula. Don’t miss the oyster happy hour for locally harvested oysters and some others from the pacific northwest. The dishes are creative using a fusion of different cultural inspirations. We stayed in Seward two nights, and the food at The Cookery was so good, we ate there both nights. The first night I had peanut crusted halibut (locally caught) on wheat berry salad and my husband had a Korean inspired wheat berry bowl. Living in Florida, I had never heard of a wheat berry before, so I wanted to taste something new and I was inspired to cook with wheat berries at home. See my post on the glorious wheat berry to learn what they are and how to cook them. The next night I had scallops in a beet barbecue sauce and for desert a “charcuterie” of chocolate. The inventive flavor profiles of the dishes combined with fresh seafood and local produce make The Cookery one of my all time favorite restaurants.
Zudy’s Cafe
Zudy’s was our final stop before leaving Seward and it was the perfect place because we got to enjoy a scrumptious meal with a gorgeous view of Resurrection Bay. Like the other restaurants Zudy’s uses fresh local ingredients in all of their sandwiches and soups, but they also have a full bakery with some amazing pasties, pies and cakes. Whatever you order at Zudy’s make sure it includes any of their mouth watering bakery items. Zudy’s was a memorable end to a splendid trip to Seward, AK.
